NEW YORK (MorichesDaily) ā€“ Procter & Gamble Co. is voluntarily expanding its recall of some of its pet food products over concerns they may contain salmonella.

Although no cases of salmonella-related illnesses have been reported, the company has voluntarily recalled variations of Eukanuba dry dog foods, IAMS dry dog foods and IAMS dry cat foods that were distributed in the United States.

The company says it discovered the bacteria in one of its plants.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, only 0.1 percent of the annual production of P&Gā€™s dry pet foods have been infected.

Salmonella can affect all animals eating these products and there is also a risk to humans who handle the contaminated pet products ā€” especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the food.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever are all human symptoms of Salmonella. Anyone exhibiting these signs after having contact with any of these products should see a doctor.

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.

Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

These products were made during a 10-day window at a single manufacturing site, the FDA reports.

Anyone who has purchased the recalled products should stop using it and throw it out.

Contact P&G toll-free at 800-208-0172 (Monday ā€“ Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST).
