Bayport, NY (MorichesDaily) – Police say that an accident this morning involving an overturned cement truck closed eastbound Sunrise Highway early Wednesday morning in Bayport, killing the driver.
According to police, John Gagliano was driving a 1990 Mack cement truck eastbound on Sunrise Highway, west of Nicolls Road, when he lost control of the vehicle at 7:39 a.m.
The truck struck the median and overturned.
Gagliano, 57, of Islip Terrace, was ejected from the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police closed Sunrise for several hours in order to conduct an investigation and cleanup.
The truck, which is owned by Giaquinto Masonry Inc. in Deer Park, was impounded for a safety check.
Investigators are looking into reports by witnesses who saw the front left tire blow out, police said.
Newsday reported that Gagliano was the same driver who lost control of another cement truck seven years ago on Sunrise Highway in East Moriches, accidentally killing state transportation worker Patrick Mapleson as he made road repairs.
His brother-in-law told Newsday that Gagliano was a safe driver. He added that Gagliano took up driving the cement truck after more than 20 years working as a New York City firefighter.
Police said they will continue the investigation into whether a mechanical malfunction may have caused the crash.
Police are asking that anyone with information should contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
