Brooklyn, NY (MorichesDaily) – On Saturday night, police charged a neighbor, Akeen Bernard, 22, with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, and tampering with evidence.

Details of the charges were not immediately released. The relationship of the suspect to the boy was not immediately learned.

The toddler is recovering from what police initially thought was a stray bullet that struck the 3-year-old boy in the head.

The toddler, a babysitter and a man were inside a second-floor apartment at 520 E. 21st St. in Flatbush when shots rang out at around 3 a.m., authorities said.

Officials said the boy was hit on the left side of his head.

Neighbors say the boy was still recovering from having been bitten by a dog several months ago.

Law enforcement sources said the man who was in the apartment was taken into custody for questioning, although it is unclear what the man’s relationship is to the boy or the babysitter.
