Brooklyn, NY (MorichesDaily) – The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards are back in New York this year, but in a different borough. Artists are taking over the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the famous awards show Sunday, many in hopes of taking home the famous ‘moon man’ statue.
The awards show, now in its 30th year, has ditched its usual haunts of Los Angeles and Manhattan for the Barclays Center, where onstage features guarantee to make jaws drop, including a 60-foot inflatable Moonman extending from the arena floor.
Not only do the VMAs have a new home, they have “a whole new texture,” according to MTV executive Colin Helms.
“It has never been this participatory or immersive,” he says.
Slated to perform are Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Drake, Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga. The pop princess, known for her elaborate performances, will make her first award show appearance since canceling her tour earlier in the year due to hip surgery. Both her and Katy Perry recently released new singles.
Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are leading nominations with six each, including Video of the Year for ‘Mirrors’ and ‘Thrift Shop.’
Though not performing, nominees Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are slated to make appearances. Also slated to appear are Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Hart and Jared Leto. Late Night host Jimmy Fallon is schedule to present the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to Justin Timberlake.
The show is scheduled to start at 9 p.m., Sunday, August 25 on MTV with Lady Gaga’s performance.
Viewers still have a chance to vote for Artist to Watch and Best Song of the Summer on MTV’s website.
